This class is for youth ages 11-15 who want the knowledge, skills, and confidence to care for infants through school-age children. You'll learn how to supervise children and infants and perform basic child-care skills. Topics include: diapering and feeding, age-appropriate games and toys, handling bedtime and discipline issues, identifying safety hazards and preventing injuries. You'll also find out how to care for common injuries and to handle emergencies such as choking, burns, cuts, and bee stings. Learn to communicate effectively with parents, and how to find and interview for babysitting jobs. Students will earn American Red Cross CPR and First Aid certification in addition to Babysitters Training Certification. Participants receive a first aid kit. |

Learn how to prepare for college from an expert! Felicia Aguirre is a recent graduate of the University of Notre Dame, and would love to share her experiences. Not only was Notre Dame her dream school, but Felicia worked for the Notre Dame Admissions Office, and knows the ins and outs of applying. It's never too early to start thinking about college. Students will get to do their own college search, select their favorite college, and try writing their own application essay. The final activity of the class will be to make a list of goals for the coming years, so that they, too, can get into their dream school. |

Using Windows Movie Maker, students will be able to create and edit their own "mini-movies." Movies can be enhanced by adding photos, sound clips, music, and personal auditory narratives recorded in their own voice. Projects will be saved on a USB flash drive for students to take home and share with friends and family. All participants will need to bring a USB jump drive to save their productions.

Students will have the opportunity to tell stories using a free computer program called Pivot Stickfigure Animator. After a brief brainstorming activity, they will use their imagination to build their own stick figures, upload a background, and create a digital story. All participants will need to bring a USB jump drive to save and share their productions. |

This class is for students who want to learn cake decorating, as well as for students who have had experience at cake decorating and baking. We will review the basics of piping and icing techniques along with learning other methods to decorate the most extravagant and elegant cakes! Students will work with a variety of pre-made cakes, of all different shapes and sizes. There will be individual as well as group activities leading up to the final day when students will work with peers to design and decorate a three-tiered cake! This is a wonderful class for students who want to explore their artistic and creative abilities! |

Build your own remote control car controlled by radio frequency! In this class you will learn the fundamentals of how an RF transmitter and receiver work! You will assemble the gear box, servo, battery compartment and wheels. No soldering is required. At the end of the class, the student will have gained the fundamentals of how to build a working remote control car for fun use around the home. (Class end time may vary depending on student's technical ability. Some students will finish earlier than others.) Only one spot available as of 6-16-11. |

Mining is Elko's largest industry, and many students' parents are employed by the mines. This class will explain what is involved in mining, and how various professionals work together to make the mines a success. From geological exploration to processing and gold recovery, you will learn about mining techniques and how Barrick Gold mines in an environmentally-safe manner. Experts from various departments at Barrick will lead hands-on demonstrations about the work that they do. By the end of four 2-hour sessions, students will have a broad understanding of gold mining in Northeastern Nevada. Barrick is sponsoring scholarships for all students who enroll in this class. Cactus Gulch is one of those small towns. It has a festive air about it as citizens get ready to celebrate the town's 20th anniversary. However, all is not running smoothly. Land disputes, disreputable card games, strange folk from out of town and hostile Indians are all adding to a tense situation.

In this class, students will get to write and star in their own movie! On the first day, students will learn how movie are made, and will write their own script together as a class. On the second day, students will audition for parts, and will begin rehearsing lines. The third day, students will come to class in full costume, ready to film! Finally, on the fourth day, students and their parents will get to watch the film together. Popcorn and candy are provided. |

Fairy Tales and movies stars are going to be shown in a similar light as Prince Charm confesses to some horrible lies on a reality talk show. Join us for a fun time as we create TV on the stage using a fairy tale theme. Students will have the chance to create some commercials to go along with this dramatic reality show. During rehearsals students will learn the basics of acting, prop use, stage area, and costume design. On the last day of class, students will get their chance to shine in this unique production as they perform for their family and friends. |

Whoever said writers had to sit at a desk? In this class, students will be participating in their own story, and will get to make it into a real book! The first week will be devoted to inventing. Fun activities you never get to do in school are used to jog the imagination and start writing. Get to know your classmates with a game of banana pass, and make them a character in your story. Eat chocolate dirt worms, and describe what it tastes like. Explore the beautiful GBC campus, and make it the jungle for your story. The possibilities are endless. During the second week, students will put their adventure together, sewing their own book binding and illustrating its pages. |
