GBC Elko Commencement set for May 19

GBC Elko Commencement set for May 19 graphic.Great Basin College estimates it will award 517 degrees and certificates during its commencement ceremony Saturday, May 19 at 10 a.m. at the Elko Convention Center.

Based on applications, the college will award 78 bachelor’s degrees, 290 associate degrees, and 149 certificates.

Three students will receive a post-baccalaureate certification in education. In addition, three students will receive an Alternative Route to Licensure certification.

Of the degrees and certificates to be awarded, 19 are from Battle Mountain; 44 from Ely; 43 from Pahrump; 77 from Winnemucca, 293 from Elko and surrounding areas, and 36 from out of state.

Five high school students from Elko, Ely, and Battle Mountain are among those who will graduate their associate degrees.

GBC will also award its first five Bachelor of Arts in English degrees. The new bachelor’s degree program accepted its first class of students in the spring of 2016.

This year, the GBC Health Sciences and Human Services Department will have also awarded 49 Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) skills certificates and 137 Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certificates.

Commencement

After 27 years of service to GBC, Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs Lynn Mahlberg is retiring from GBC June 30, and will be delivering this year’s commencement speech.

Nevada System of Higher Education Vice Chancellor for Community Colleges Nate Mckinnon and Regents Patrick Carter, Cathy McAdoo and John Moran will be in attendance, along with members of the Great Basin College Advisory Board and Trustees of the Great Basin College Foundation.

Honorary Awards

Longtime Elko resident and GBC supporter James Kent McAdoo will be posthumously awarded the 2018 Great Basin College honorary bachelor’s degree during the ceremony. McAdoo had served on the GBC Institutional Advisory Council since 1994 until his passing earlier this year. McAdoo’s wife, Cathy McAdoo will accept the award on his behalf.
