Student success and retention are key components to the mission here at Great Basin College. As a faculty member, you are very important in this process as you are the first ones that interact with the student and are often the first to recognize a student who might be at risk of not being successful. The interaction you have with your students is very important, and research shows that students who are able to develop a strong rapport with their instructors are more likely to be successful and to reach out when they need assistance. Also, the Student Support & Retention office has put together some tools to assist you in the retention of your students. Student success is essential here at Great Basin College as we want every student to fulfill all their academic goals.
Student Support Services — For Faculty
Early Alert. One of the easiest and most effective ways to increase retention and success among students here at GBC is our Early Alert System (EAS). The Early Alert System allows faculty to quickly alert the Retention Office about any student who is at-risk (has poor academic performance or shows potential for failing/dropping out of GBC.) A faculty member submits an alert through My GBC Self-Service and it is directly sent to the Retention Office. The student is then contacted by a member of the retention team, receives one-on-one coaching, and when necessary, is directed to appropriate support services. The goal of EAS is to identify at-risk students early in the semester, intervene, and help them self-regulate their own academic success. Student Success Classroom Presentations
Student Resources Presentation: These presentations are aimed to inform or remind students of the many resources Great Basin College has to offer. These presentations are usually conducted at the beginning of the semester or around the mid-semester exams (for the students who are struggling and might need extra help) and usually take between 5-10 minutes.
Student Success Workshops: In addition to our regularly scheduled workshops for students, we are happy to accommodate specialized workshops for students. These workshops are proposed by you as a faculty member, but then designed and conducted by retention staff; you provide the necessary information and we will do the rest. Topics might include study skills and tips, time management, note taking, test taking strategies, test anxiety, learning styles, college success factors and more.
Substitute Workshop for Instructor Absence: Instructors who know that they will be absent for a class can contact the Retention Coordinator (preferably a week in advance) to request retention staff to cover their class. Depending on availability, they can provide a student success workshop that targets the needs of the class as determined by the instructor.
