The CARES Act

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Trump on March 27th, 2020. The CARES Act provides Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students for expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to coronavirus (including eligible expenses under a student’s cost of attendance such as food, housing, course materials, technology, health care and childcare).

Great Basin College signed and returned to the Department of Education the Certification and Agreement on April 14, 2020 acknowledging that GBC would use no less than 50% of the total funds ($470,060) received under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students.

Great Basin College was awarded $235,030 to be used and distributed to students affected under the CARES Act.

To date, GBC has distributed $235,030 of the amount received to 469 students.

The estimated total number of students at GBC eligible to participate in programs under Section 484 in Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 is 1,028.

Automatic Qualification for Funding No Application Needed

Based on guidance from the Department of Educations, GBC has allocated the CARES Act Emergency grant funding under Section 18004(a)(1) automatically to all eligible students attending the spring 2020 semester who qualify under the following criteria:

  • Enrolled as a degree seeking student in one or more in-person courses for Spring 2020 semester
  • Completed the 2019-2020 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) listing GBC’s school code (006977)
  • Be a US citizen or eligible noncitizen
  • Have a valid Social Security number
  • Have a high school diploma, GED or high school equivalency
  • Meet Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements
  • Turned in all the required financial aid forms on your to-do list
  • Not have completely withdrawn prior to April 1, 2020
  • Not be included in one of these groups: current high school student, prisoner and faculty and staff
  • Meet all the eligibility requirements to receive Title IV Federal Student Aid
  • Be enrolled in at least 6 credits for the spring 2020 term

Great Basin College awarded eligible students’ who were in at least 6 credits and less than 12 credits $400. Eligible students’ who were enrolled in 12 or more credits during the spring 2020 semester were awarded $550.
All students enrolled during the spring 2020 semester received the following letter about the CARES Act.
