UPDATES ON THE NOVEL CORONAVIRUS
(COVID-19)

Great Basin College understands and shares the concerns of the campus community regarding novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

Our aim is to provide information and updates about novel coronavirus, while reassuring our faculty, staff, students, friends and visitors that measures are being taken to protect our campus community.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Information and Resources

Covid-19 Vaccination Clinics

Please contact your healthcare provider, local clinic, urgent care facility or Pharmacy for vaccinations. You can also find immunization information at https://www.nvcovidfighter.org/

Why get a Covid-19 Vaccine?

  • Authorized Covid-19 vaccines are effective.
  • They will protect you, your family and loved ones from serious illness and death from Covid-19.
  • If enough Nevadans get vaccinated, we can keep our businesses, restaurants, and schools open.
  • Widespread vaccination will end this pandemic, the way it ended smallpox, polio, and measles.

Coronavirus and GBC

Great Basin College continues to be aware of the continuing health concerns of COVID-19 and the potential variants that may affect our faculty, staff, students, and community members. Great Basin College will continue to work within the State, NSHE, CDC and local County and City guidelines to determine any changes in our protocols and guidelines. Please see your specific course syllabus or speak with your instructor for specific information regarding course format and protocols.

Ensuring the Health of the Public Higher Education Community

On June 30, 2022, the Board of Regents approved a resolution providing that the Nevada System of Higher Education will continue to follow any health and safety directives of the State that are intended to ensure a safe workplace and educational environment for faculty, staff, and students; and acknowledging the Presidents’ duty to provide leadership in the planning and implementation necessary for the safe and successful operation of their respective institution.

Vaccines

At its June 30, 2022, meeting the Board of Regents repealed its emergency COVID-19 vaccination policy. However, NSHE continues to strongly encourage students and employees to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. Learn more about where to get a vaccine here: www.immunizenevada.org.

Practice Social Distancing and Remain Vigilant

Local counties retain authority over COVID-19 social distancing, building, and event capacity requirements. NSHE institutions must continue to follow their local county directives.

We all still must remain vigilant and follow appropriate health protocols, including monitoring personal health and continuing healthy hygiene practices, as the fight against COVID is not over. COVID-19 policies remain subject to amendment whereby mitigation efforts or restrictions may be strengthened or relaxed.

It is everyone’s personal decision to wear or not wear a face covering while in public places, including on NSHE properties, inside and outside. Everyone’s choice, regardless of what it is, should be free from any criticism, judgement, or retaliation.

Masks will continue to be provided for students and employees. COVID-19 self-tests are available at no cost for students and employees at GBC locations in Elko, Ely, Pahrump and Winnemucca.

Please note that students and faculty in certain programs may have other policies that they must follow.

Employees and students who are not feeling well should not be present at a physical location and should comply with proper reporting off procedures or informing their instructors.

Continued good hygiene practices, such as frequent hand washing, and disinfecting are strongly encouraged.

Protocols in Place

  • All students and employees are obligated to follow codes of conduct and workplace policies that demand honesty.
  • Knowing and willful violations of this policy by a student or employee may result in disciplinary action.
  • Employees and students are responsible for monitoring their health for any of the following symptoms and not report to work if any are present: fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, and diarrhea. Please do not come to work if you are not feeling well. Employees must follow proper call off procedures in the event of illness.
  • Social or physical distancing is still encouraged, especially in crowded areas.
  • Sign-in sheets IN ALL BUILDINGS are still required to facilitate contact tracing.

Great Basin College is committed to safely providing education and promoting a healthy environment that supports the well-being of our students, faculty and staff. GBC will continue to monitor this situation and will continue to provide updates on guidelines and recommendations to help promote the health and safety of our campus. If you have questions regarding the NSHE/Great Basin College COVID-19 policies, send an email to gbc-covid@gbcnv.edu.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, NSHE has strictly adhered to all federal, state, and local directives to keep our community healthy and safe. NSHE will continue to follow this practice. Additional information and current guidelines can be found on the CDC website.

GBC Student Housing

Students residing in college housing are reminded that they may have additional protocols and procedures to abide by.

Travel Advisory for all Faculty, Staff and Students

Great Basin College asks all members of the campus community to exercise caution when choosing to travel. Employees and students are strongly encouraged to check the U.S. State Department web pages listed below for current restrictions and warnings prior to traveling outside of the United States. Employees and students deciding to travel within the United States are strongly encouraged to check with each state they plan to visit and verify their COVID-19 restrictions and policies. Employees traveling outside of the Country, shall follow all CDC Guidelines. They must notify their supervisor and human resources of their trip and return status. If, at any time they begin to feel ill, run a fever or have other symptoms of COVID-19 they should call their health care provider or the Elko County COVID-19 hotline. Students living in the dorms who travel, must contact the housing coordinator to advise him of their trip, and discuss how and where to self-quarantine if necessary.

With the Coronavirus (COVID -19) variant cases continuing to occur, it is important to take extra precautions and consider if you need to travel. GBC recommends before you make your travel plans please visit:
