Courses in the Certificate of Achievement Program in Substance Abuse Counselor Training are designed to help prepare students for employment in social service agencies, mental health centers, correctional institutions, rehabilitation facilities, community health education organizations, private practice, or other settings which provide substance abuse/addiction education, prevention, and/or intervention and treatment.
Courses may be used as electives or for continuing education by students or professionals in education, corrections, law enforcement, and the justice system, addictions counseling and treatment, social work, nursing, radiology, or emergency medical care.
The AAS degree and Certificate of Achievement in Human Services programs share common courses, so that students may easily complete requirements for the AAS degree while completing a certificate program. Entry level courses have no prerequisites or program entry requirements. Students choose to begin at any time by registering for courses. However, academic advising prior to beginning any course of study is highly encouraged. Most coursework may be completed online, through interactive video, and/or by independent study on a case-by-case basis.
At least 15 hours of coursework must be successfully completed at Great Basin College. Substitutions/credits for prior, equivalent coursework may be permitted, at the discretion of the Department of Health Sciences and Human Services and/or the GBC Registrar. An overall 2.0 average is required for completion of the Certificate of Achievement.

The mission of the Human Services Program parallels that of GBC in terms of providing a student-centered curriculum which can be utilized to pursue opportunities for increasing knowledge, personal development, and professional service to the community.
The essential goals of the Human Services Program are to not only develop student appreciation for the bio-psychosocial and cultural needs of clients, but also to provide support for students as they process personal, professional, and career development challenges.
