A GBC writing tutor will read a paper with a student and offer suggestions that lead toward improvement. The tutor will attempt to point out areas of confusion and problems with documentation, grammar, organization, and coherence. Tutors will make suggestions in a way that leads a student to self-discovery and self-correction. A tutor is an outside, objective voice for the student. The student must remember, however, that although the tutor's comments are made from an informed and practiced position, the student must maintain ownership of the paper and ultimately come to his/her own conclusions about how to improve it.
GBC writing tutors are friendly and informative. Their purpose is to help students. Students may visit the center as often as they like, but be sure to make an appointment to have a paper examined. Call now to schedule English/Writing Tutoring at 775-327-2247.
The GBC Writing Center tutors are not hired to "fix" student essays. Ultimately, the job of correction is the responsibility of the student. A GBC tutor is in no way responsible for a student's paper. The tutor will offer informed suggestions on how to improve an essay; the student can then incorporate those suggestions as necessary. A tutor's suggestions are not to replace or override the comments of an instructor.
GBC tutors do not accept “drop off” work; they do not provide an editing service.
Tips and how-to guides are available under the English Resources link on the menu at left.
